HOW TO STAY COOL IN THE ART WORLD: NADA MIAMI BEACH

With 43 first time exhibitors, NADA Art Fair in Miami Beach is bringing the edge back to Art Basel.

It’s no surprise that Art Basel Miami attracts some of the most affluent gallerists and high society art collectors. That’s why the Miami-based Art Week has stayed on the forefront of showcasing some of the most coveted artists of our time.

However, there is a new show in town: NADA Miami Beach. As opposed to the other entrenched art galleries that have dominated for decades, NADA (New Art Dealers Alliance) provides a platform for new emerging artists.

Of the 43 first time exhibitors to the fair, NADA featured 29 indie spaces and budding galleries showing smaller-scale, unique projects. The New Art Deal Alliance

Its choice in venue lends itself to the show’s independent roots. Tucked away from South Beach’s packed scene, the Deauville Beach Resort sits in North Miami Beach. This historic hotel features a 1950’s charm, giving any attendee a nostalgic feeling for Miami’s Art Deco heritage.

Art Basel’s attendance was noticeably thinner than years past, potential due to the Zika outbreak. NADA however, saw a surge of new visitors and record-breaking price tags on its art.

Art dealer Simon Preston announced he sold 80 percent of his featured pieces, including a 7-foot tall steel sculpture from artist Michelle Lopez, which sold for a whopping $18,000. The frenzy began only a few hours into the fair with another sculpture by Tony Matelli, which went for $40,000. Two paintings by Andrew Kuo, a New York City native had selling prices of $25,000 each.

Some emerging trends appeared using different mediums such as neon, metal, as well as combining photographic and graphic elements. Surprisingly, it seemed like the election did not happen, with very little politically charged pieces – leaving room for classic, minimalist subjects to take precedence.

Art aficionados and spectators alike, find total solace escaping the normal Art Basel folly in exchange for a more humbling experience at NADA Miami Beach.
