CalciumPro

A trusted tool for patients looking to understand their lab results and health risks

The Evolution of CalciumPro

First launched in 2012, the CalciumPro app was developed to help users analyze their calcium health and assess potential issues related to their bones, kidneys, parathyroid glands, and vitamin D levels. Created in collaboration with the Norman Parathyroid Center, the app leveraged a vast patient dataset to provide personalized insights, risk assessments, and educational resources. Over the years, it has become a trusted tool for individuals looking to better understand their lab results and health risks.

For more than ten years, the app’s fundamental coding and design stayed mostly unaltered, despite regular maintenance. By 2024, the app’s age was showing in both its underlying architecture and appearance. Once a suitable option, the original framework has now accrued technical debt, making compatibility and maintenance more difficult. Although it was still functioning, the user interface was no longer up to the standards of contemporary app users.

Addressing Technical and Design Debt

Viewing our relationship with Norman Parathyroid as a partnership, we recognized the need for a redesign and encouraged the team to take the next step. The goal wasn’t just to refresh the look and feel of the app but to strategically prepare for a complete technological overhaul. By modernizing the design with a more intuitive and visually appealing interface, we ensured the app would be ready for its planned rebuild in React Native, allowing for better performance, scalability, and long-term maintainability.

A Modern Design That Feels Familiar

When CalciumPro first launched, its design was considered innovative, particularly its dashboard-style gauges, which provided users with an intuitive way to visualize their health data. User testing over the years confirmed that these gauges remained a highly effective feature, so preserving their functionality was a key priority in the redesign.

However, the original interface reflected the heavily skeuomorphic design trend of its time, one that now felt dated. Our challenge was to bring the app into the present with a cleaner, more modern aesthetic while retaining the clarity and uniqueness that made it so effective.

The new design streamlines the interface, reducing visual clutter while maintaining the bold, easy-to-interpret graphics that users rely on. By refining color palettes, typography, and styling, we ensured that the updated UI feels fresh and contemporary while remaining instantly familiar to long-time users.

Introducing AI-Powered Assistance

As part of the long-term vision for CalciumPro, we also envisioned a major shift in how users access information. The current resource library, while extensive, required users to browse and search for relevant content manually.

In the redesigned experience, we’re introducing a natural language AI assistant trained on the app’s medical resources. Instead of hunting for information, users will be able to ask specific questions and receive direct, personalized responses. More importantly, the AI will proactively deliver relevant insights based on a user’s diagnosis, helping them better understand their condition without the need for extensive research

Streamlining the User Experience

One of the biggest opportunities for improvement in the redesign was simplifying how users interact with their health data. In the original version of CalciumPro, analysis and insights were presented in separate areas, requiring users to navigate between sections to fully understand their results. To create a more intuitive experience, we combined these elements into relevant areas, making it easier for users to see the full picture at a glance.

For example, instead of simply listing risk factors separately from lab results, the redesigned interface integrates these insights directly alongside dynamic graphs. This contextual approach allows for a deeper, more personalized understanding of results, reducing the need for manual interpretation and making key takeaways clearer at a glance.

The redesigned CalciumPro app reflects Haneke Design’s approach to creating impactful, user-centered digital experiences, helping individuals make informed decisions about their calcium health with ease. Haneke Design’s user-centered approach to digital experiences is reflected in the redesigned CalciumPro app, empowering users to make informed health decisions intuitively.
