Haneke Design and Gerdau Expand Driver Connection Application Across North America

The custom application’s impressive performance at Gerdau’s Cartersville, GA steel mill sparks expansion to mills across the country.

Background

Back in 2019, Gerdau enlisted Haneke Design to develop a solution for their Cartersville, GA mill aimed at improving the driver check-in process.

Haneke Design created a customized web and mobile solution that integrated with Gerdau’s existing SAP ERP software.

This solution allows drivers to check in right from their mobile devices, eliminating the need to exit their vehicle and walk to the office.

Drivers also receive push notifications and directions guiding them to designated loading areas in the mill.

This solution has enhanced the user experience for truck drivers and mill employees and has increased efficiency at the mill.

“This solution has allowed us to capture significant time stamps that let us track our drivers’ loading times as well as their total stay time. This has enabled us to determine gaps or opportunities in our loading process that has led to valuable improvements. So much so that other Gerdau mills are implementing the Driver Connection App in their facilities as well,” explains Bryan Hood, the Improvement Facilitator for the Cartersville, GA mill.

Enterprise Rollout

Due to the success of the application, Gerdau enlisted Haneke Design to modify and scale the existing application to support all of Gerdau’s mills across the country.

In order to support multiple mills, the Haneke Design team refactored the existing back end to support a multi-tenant environment.

This includes feature flags that can be configured based on the mill’s needs and requirements.

“It’s really exciting to see how our original project is becoming a strategic enterprise initiative,” explains Jody.

The new, modified application is first being rolled out to Gerdau’s steel mill in Charlotte, NC.
